Basic
Strategy
The most
important system and the foundation for any card counting system
is basic strategy. Basic strategy is a mathematical system that
shows the optimal method of play (the one with the highest expectated
return) without keeping track of the cards. This strategy is a set
of playing rules based on the cards the player is holding and the
dealer’s upcard. By correctly using basic strategy, players can
reduce the casino advantage from 5% into less than 1%.
Basic
Strategy Charts
There
are slight variations in basic strategy depending on the exact rules
of the game and the number of decks dealt. The most common basic
strategy charts are the single deck and the multiple deck charts:
A completed
knowledge of the basic strategy charts is essential in order to
become a winning Blackjack player.
Insurance
Basic
strategy advises never take insurance (even if you have a Blackjack).
The dealer’s chance of having a Blackjack, when the upcard is an
ace is about 32% (this corresponds to odds of about 2.13 to 1) but
insurance only pays 2 to 1. So, unless you are counting cards never
take insurance.
Rule
Variation
The impact
of rule variation on the player’s expected return can be significant.
For most games the basic strategy player’s expectation is between
–0,7% and 0,0%. Using the exact house rules and the number of decks
dealt, the correct basic strategy chart can be generated using a
Basic
Strategy Calculator.
